Jophiel’s Designer Grade series is thrilled to introduce you to Flaca Jewelry, owned and operated by Amy Shepsman. Amy just recently relocated from New York to Indiana. We feel very lucky to have the opportunity to work face to face with this Forbes 30 Under 30 award-winning designer.
“Flaca” was a nickname given to Amy while she apprenticed as a jewelry manufacturer. One of her co-workers nicknamed her “Flacasita,” a Spanish term that means “skinny,” but also has a deeper more sentimental meaning “my sweetheart, my love.” The term of endearment stuck and Flaca Jewelry was born.
The collection was founded to empower the independence of women by inspiring uniqueness. This collection is designed for a woman that recognizes quality and appreciates hand-craftsmanship over fast-finds. With this in mind, staying true to this quality and craftsmanship affects every decision Amy makes and to ensure proper quality, Flaca Jewelry is sourced and produced entirely in New York City’s diamond district.
Amy has always had a passion for designing. She graduated from Cornell University with a Fine Arts degree. While at school, Amy fell in love with the idea of transforming ordinary objects into art, this is where her passion for jewelry design originated. She draws much of her design inspiration from travel, finding things that move her, and then building on that emotion. Amy sketches out all of her product ideas in a journal, keeping in mind the woman she is designing for. She loves the idea of turning a concept into a tangible piece that woman can wear, “wearable art,” as Amy would say!
